So as the title says i'm relatively new to sabers and saber combat. Just purchased my first saber a few days ago and am eagerly awaiting it in the mail, however i do have a few questions and was wondering if you all could answer them?

So from what I've been reading and gathering on information i'm really interested learning the forms and basic steps of ataru. I started watching the tpla videos and they are very informative but i'm not sure if there's more i can watch or read to also help me understand anymore basics of it or not? Also what the most recommended styles of muscle and body training for saber sparring and the like?

Hey! Welcome to the forums! Tlpa has a great training program you can actually become a part of. Also you can contact myself for Skype or google+ training sessions where we give feedback and personal instruction. You can get the same care as an apprentice with Tlpa.

The Jedi Path has cursory philosophical knowledge of the forms, and our own master Uilos has a discourse on the seven forms that will blow your socks off... With the Force.

I would reccomend you learn Form 1 : Shii cho first. It covers the basics for pretty much all the forms, and give you a healthy head start.

I would recommend the Seven Forms Symposium, TPLA LIVE!'s first video with out resident panel of experts. I just found out about this yesterday, I'm right along there with you..But I know this is a great place to start.

Best thing to start off with is go old school play with your saber. Remember there wasn't a bowflex in the 1500's and samurai used bokkens as to train. Get use to it the if you feel you need more strength get a heavy metal bar (what I do) and swing it in the same fashion of a saber. If you don't wish to do that watch TPLA excersise video for saber training.

In terms of conditioning, a lot of cardio and some calisthenics will most likely help you out considerably.

I second this.  Shii-Cho is the place to start, learn the basics until they're second nature and then move onto the more advanced techniques as shown in the Ataru videos.  Any of us at TPLA are happy to help you out, and if you're interested there is a Learners in Exile program which you can use to progress as well.
