(Dark points only) Do not hesitate. Show no mercy

Oscar season is upon us with the nominations for this year's ceremony recently announced. However, there seems to be growing sentiment about the lack of diversity in the nominees.

I'd be interested in hearing others opinion on this subject.

Personally, I think there is a massive lack of opportunities in front/behind the cameras in Hollywood for many demographics, whether that be race, gender or sexual orientation.

In 2014 they did a survey of the 7600 Academy Award voting members: 94% Caucasian, 76% male with an average of 63 years old. How is that an accurate representation of the movie going public?

I'm not saying people from a certain demographic should be nominated purely because they fill a gap; itshould be based on talent (and all those people nominated are very talented). However there needs to be more diversity in the judging panel.

Sadly, it's more about power and influence than art.

Most people I've talked to have stated, as far as the Oscars are concerned, it's been a weak year for movies in general since there's no clear candidate for best picture this time around. And sort of changing up the Oscar's is hard since (correct me if I'm wrong) but many of the people who vote and pick the nominees have lifetime positions that aren't easily replaced.

I know I've heard about them adding a few more nominations to diversify the pool, but earnestly the only reason I'd care about that would just to see Force Awakens get an actual Nomination for Best Picture.

I know it wouldn't have a chance in hell of winning but it irritates me thinking that Avatar got a nomination for it but Force Awakens can't.

Too true. The Oscars is all politics.
