Title: Wired Dominix
Post by: Kaiden Shardsbane on February 12, 2011, 06:53:40 PM
This is just a simple mod, but I think it looks really cool.  The wire stand out well against the black hilt, and compliments the orange blade nicely.  Tell me what you guys think:

The front of the saber:

Detail of the anchor point:

The back of the saber:

And finally, the saber lit up.  Sorry the pic is blurred.

Oh, wow! That does look nice.

Thank you.  I'm thinking about adding an expanded section of wire near the emitter, kinda "floating" around it without actually touching the hilt, but that's gonna take some practice.

That would look pretty nice. But like you said, will definitely take practice

Very nice touch. Kind of reminds me of a earth-like type of design. Well, with the vine looking metal going across the hilt. Not sure if you were going for that, but either way, nice job. How does it handle? I would worry about moving around the wire too much. But then again, if you tie it tight enough I guess it wouldnt be too bad.

Kudo's for originality!  Is it just the bend in the metal holding it in place, or did you attach it somehow?  By the look of it, there is no epoxy or anything.  Nice effect!

Just the bend in the metal holding it on.  It's set into the lowest groove, to hold it down the length of the hilt, and then wrapped around the activator switch to keep it from rotating.  The rest is just the tension of the wire, which gets very tight, because I put those bend in it after it's on the saber.  It handles very nicely, and doesn't move at all when I swing the saber.  Although my brother doesn't like how the wire feels on the hilt, I like the extra grip it gives.

Also, I've added a jump ring near the pommel, so I can clip it to my belt, and I finished the "expanded" section around the emitter.

Wicked!  Makes the hilt look infected!

Look I'll admit, I'm not really digging it. But that's just me.
What I do like is that you took your saber and made it your own. You added your own personal touch to it and said "hey, this is my saber and theres not another one like it". Even if I'm not a huge fan of the look I have to say very cool work. :)

Do you find the wire digging into your hand when battling?

Well, note that I said "Tell me what you think" and not "Like this or die".  Glad you appreciate the work, even if you don't like the design.

Debatable.  My brother says it digs into his hands a bit, making feel uncomfortable.  I, however, like the added grip it gives me.  It doesn't stand out from the hilt any more than on O-ring would, except for around the emitter of course.

That is sweet!  Some blue or purple coated/anodized wire would have a SWEET lighning effect too - like your hilt was just coursing with force lightning.  Definitely a cool, asymmetric look though.

Yeah, I considered using some slightly blue-tinted silver wire.  However, I figured that short of using EL wire or Fiberoptics, it'd never really look like force lightning, so I went with copper to match the orange blade.  And who says I can't have yellow lightning...

I like the way the black and gold looks together. the wire around the emitter looks like a cool idea.

very nice stuff...you could play with differing thicknesses of wire, and maybe a small amount of copper sheet cut into shapes of panels or designs to maybe further visually tie the wire into black of the hilt...very sweet work.

I would almost want to cut the wires around the emiter to give it a more of a lightning look. but I have no idea if that would stay put together then.

I was thinking this same exact thing!! That would be totally AWESOME!!  8)

Right.  I forgot to update this, but I used some bronze vehicle paint in the grooves to "tie in" the wires.

My original idea, in fact, was to have loose "lightning" wires arcing over the emitter and partway over the blade.  However, I soon discovered that the wire tended to peel back from the emitter during dueling, and was nearly impossible to get back into it's proper place.  It can be done, and looks really cool, but for dueling purposes, it doesn't work.

I would think so. the lightning design would be horrible for dueling. i would stab myself with the wires every time.
