I recently got my first saberstaff, consisting of 2 Sentinel V4 with 24" blue blades and a Quick Release coupler. To make it more my own and aesthetically pleasing, I added some simple modifications that are removable, on the off chance I didn't like them.

The first thing was o-rings in the grooves of the hilts, as I'd seen photos of many examples of this that looked great. But I wanted something a little different than just black o-rings in every groove, so I used an alternating pattern of 3 black o-rings and then 3 red o-rings.

These work, and look great so far. But the next thing that was actually more of a functional addition than a purely aesthetic one was the addition of black gaffer tape wrapped around the two choke points on one hilt. The quick release coupler can only be engaged in one direction, so with two identical staff hilts and blades, it's near impossible to tell which side is forward, so it is very hard to tell which way to manipulate (push or pull) the coupler to separate the blades quickly. So by adding these two fairly prominent black wraps, I can try to visually check which side of the staff is forward. The different texture will hopefully also allow me to feel which side is which, so I should be able to know which way to manipulate the coupler without even having to look at the staff.

They're both pretty simple modifications, and not particularly expensive, so would definitely recommend considering one or both of these options if you are looking to get your feet wet in some simple, and removable, saber modifications. They do also make a variety of colors of gaffer tape, if you want something other than black.

I also think that if you wanted to put something besides gaffer tape as a wrap, but didn't want to leave residue if you decide to take it off, perhaps putting that other wrap over the gaffer tape could protect the saber from the tape residue, as when you remove the over-wrap, the residue would be on the gaffer tape, which can then be removed itself. Not necessary if you know you're going to like and keep the wrap you go with, but perhaps a worthwhile consideration if you are unsure.
