Title: Howwwwwdyyyyy Hooooooooo!!!
Post by: Dizzy Darth Vizzy on November 30, 2016, 03:26:01 AM
Hi guys, first time poster AND first time in the forums (at least to represent myself).

I've been watching online LIGHTSABERS since the release of The Phantom Menace, and hence forth, "other guys".  Because of this simple connection, when it would occur to me to look for a lightsaber prop like 8 years later, I found the same "other guys".

Fast forward to 2016.  I ran a search simply for "lightsabers", and after one or two sites, I found this site.

Did a BUNCH of research on YouTube and various "other guys" sites, and came back to this one after 22 days.

This is the company I will give my hard earned cash to.  This is the company that will not let me down.  This is the company that will provide me with an Emerald Guardian Lightsaber With Sound.

WoooooHooooo!!!

Anyway, I hope to have a welcome presence here, and look forward to getting that saber!!!  Can't order it for a bit, but will be doing shortly.

Thanks again, and I hope to be a forum member that is welcomed and offers something to everyone.

- DDV

Welcome to the party.

You have chosen correctly. US will not let you down, their products are excellent and their customer service is beyond anything you'll find.

Excellent choice for your first saber.  The next obvious question is, what are you looking at for your second? Also, in case you haven't noticed, we here on the forums love pictures and videos when people get their sabers, so feel free to post some when you do get it.

As odd as this may sound, depending on when you're looking to order, you might want to wait for the next raffle, which will probably, though not guaranteed to be, sometime in January (that's my own personal guess, they usually do one or two winter raffles, but that not a guaranteed thing). Mostly because, if you're going to buy the saber anyway, why not go for a chance to win a second (and possibly third)?

There is a forum search function in the upper right that looks like a magnifying glass, which, depending on which forum layout you're using, isn't the most obvious thing.  Otherwise, if you have any questions, always feel free to ask.

Thank you very much to welcoming me.  I can't believe that I'm going to plunk down like, $550 dollars for a lightsaber.  However, I can't WAIT to get the darned thing!  I will certainly post pics when I get it.  Thanks again for welcoming me to the community.   ;D

$550?  Yes, it's a lot. Here's the thing. Two things actually. One, when you get it and turn it on, you'll know it was worth it and then some. Especially getting one with sound  ;).  Two, there are folks here with 20+ in their collection.... I've only got 8, although I will say that one was from a free giveaway sale, and two others were raffle prizes, but still...  And I cannot wait to get more  ;D

Anyway, have fun looking around the forums, there's A LOT of information on a lot of topics, most of which is even useful ;).

You are very welcome here, we're happy to have you. I believe that you spent that money. . . hmmm, I was going to say "wisely", but is a lightsaber a wise choice? Of course it is! ;D ;D ;D   Just a warning, once you turn that saber on the first time, there's no going back. Your wallet will now hurt you even more.  ;)

The first thing I did when I clicked here was give you your first point, cause your name made me laugh. :D

Like Vivectius said, feel free to ask questions and also use the search function. Otherwise, jump in wherever you want and have fun.

Happy sabering!

Welcome to the forums.

As Calon said, once you get your saber, all you will do is save up for the next one. I only have 1 so far, but I have five or six others that I am looking at buying when I get enough money. Ever since I got it, I new my money was going to disappear very quickly. Maybe I shouldn't say disappear, because I know exactly what is happening to it. It is being turned into a work of art and beauty. Not to mention self-defense weapon. ;D

Again welcome, and have a point.

Hey Dizzy Darth Vizzy!

Welcome to the forum. :)

Feel free to ask questions. Everyone here is very helpful and friendly.

Great choice in the Guardian.  Looking forward to seeing those pics. :)

Welcome to the Forum,

I can see from your post that you have been lurking about before posting.  Most people don't refer to "the Other Guys" as "The Other Guys" until someone points this out.   :D  At least you adhered to forum rules and etiquette.   :o

As for your choice of sabers, I know that you will love the Guardian,  it is a little on the beastly side as far as sabers go, but its well made and extremely durable.  Since it was my first saber Im kinda partial to it.

Viv and DC pretty much covered the rest, so once again welcome!

Dont forget to post pics when you can.

welcome to the forums.

there's a section for everything here. combat, costume, art, even games.
after you order you'll check the shipping info many times. (we all do that) it don't change on 1st or 6th. won't have any disappointment from here.

Hey guys, thank you ALL for your warm welcome and sage advice on how to use the force forums.  I appreciate your enthusiasm to have a new member, and yes, I will be ordering that Emerald Guardian saber sometime soon.  And just like the rest of you, I'll be drooling all over it when I first see it and then turn it on.

What I really want to do is to learn how to wield this thing like some of you cats on YouTube.  I have no experience in this whatsoever, albeit I do find it funny that, I've owned a samurai sword for 7 years (nothing too fancy folks, I got it off of trueswords for $40), but it's more of a decoration than anything else.  The only reason I've not tried any wielding techniques with it is because it has a very long and sharp blade.  Since I'd like to keep my fingers (and my ears, and my nose, and my etc), I have decided NOT to try and learn how to wield that thing.  Additionally, it has a very large and protruding knuckle guard that would surely bring this talent to an agonizing crawl.

So, I have one question for you guys - surely I'm not the only person in here is has (or will soon) purchased a saber and didn't know a THING about how to wield this thing correctly, fluidly, and quickly.  I'm willing to put in AT LEAST one hour a day to get this down.  My question is, given one hour per day, how long did it take for YOU to wield a lightsaber with some skill?

Looking forward to that reply, and just posting with you guys in general.  Thanks again for the warm welcome, from the feedback in this thread I think I can say... "Chewie, we're finally home".

 ;D

Greetings and welcome to the saber forum nut house. As others have already stated, we love pics and vids of others sabers. As for practicing spinning, I've used both a broom handle and my softball bat. Start slow so the movements come more naturally to you and as you get better, the speed will follow. The wait for your first saber can seem like an eternity, I know because I'm waiting for my second saber to arrive.

The two saber combat forums have a lot of good information, both for learning spins and fancy stuff, as well as practical combat techniques.

Look up TPLA on Facebook and YouTube for a great place to start for combat.  They are NOT the only ones out there you can learn from, and I encourage you to learn from as much as you can, but they are my personal preferred starting place. Two others are Bendu and Ludosport.

For spins, go to the saber artistry forum and just search for Darth Cephalus.  He's got a lot of very, very good video tutorials.  He's in the process of redoing some of them, but what's there currently is exceptionally useful.  Again, he's not the only person to learn from, but he's my preferred place to start.

To answer your question regarding how long it took me to learn to wield a Lightsaber with some skill, I had an unfair head start with a background in Kenjutsu.  There are some very big differences between a Lightsaber and a sword, mostly that the entire surface of the Lightsaber blade can cut, so you can be much more sloppy with a Lightsaber than a sword in that regard.  In fact, that was something I had an issue with at one point, all of my Lightsaber practice had made my sword cuts sloppy.  I had to go back and practice with the sword exclusively for 6 months or so to get back into proper form.

So, I could already use a Lightsaber with some skill when I first got mine.  So, to answer your question, it depends on what you define as "some skill."  Are you looking more for combat, or for spinning?

For combat... my personal view would be at least a couple of years.

For spins... my personal view would be, depending on how complex you're looking to go, 6 months to a year.

But I have high standards for what I consider skilled.  I know there have been people who have mastered spins in weeks or even days.  I don't know how much time they put into it, but it's certainly possible.

My best advice for whatever you choose to study is always start at the beginning, with the most basic, easiest techniques and gain a firm mastery of those before moving on.  Too many people want to jump ahead to the advanced "cool" stuff, and it tends to not work very well.

Wow, thanks again guys for your advice and welcoming me.  You guys are truly cool cats, and I appreciate all of the feedback.  For those of you who have offered me advice on handling a saber, I only want to spin (at this moment) and get a true feel for the saber itself.  I'd like to commit to a year of handling this blade - I've seen a lot of videos and so forth, and once I get my saber (and post pics of it or a vid on YT), I'll begin that stuff immediately.  I have considered that it is best to learn how to wield this thing of beauty on the grass instead of the street, so I don't drop my new baby and damage/scar/scratch it.

I'll jump into a different thread now, I hope to contribute as well as learn.

Thanks again for everything guys, this is an awesome community, and I cannot wait to get my saber!

Welcome, Dizzy! A Guardian is an excellent choice for your first 'sabre - I'm confident you'll love it.

One thing I'd suggest with practicing is not to get too hung up on any specific move. While in the ideal you'd want to be able to chain together moves and flourishes, in reality you may find your body objecting to certain things!

I do a little spinning, and while by no means very good, I can do the basic forward spin for ages, but with the backward spin I always end up whacking my own head after a few goes :D Being prepared to work hard at it is good, but remember you're there to have fun - if it stops being fun, you can end up with a $550 ornament really quickly, and no-one wants that!

Point VERY WELL TAKEN.  Yeah, I bought a bow a few years back, cost me over $1,000.  It has been an "ornament" for almost all of the time I have owned it.  Too bad, it's a damn good bow (Hoyt Carbon Spider Turbo).

Very good advice.  Yes, I know that practice should be slow and develop both my rhythm and beat, so I will take it slowly, and not-so-seriously so as to have fun learning how to master these kinds of moves.  Thanks for the advice, much appreciated!

What kind of saber do you own?

Hey there, Dizzy - very cool forum name! I think it's fantastic you did all that research and settled on UltraSabers. Like has been said already, I love your enthusiasm, and you chose wisely indeed with the Guardian and will soon see for yourself.  ;)  I just received my Guardian in Dark Violet Amethyst, and without hesitation I can say it is one of UltraSabers' finest creations indeed. It's fantastic, and if you don't mind spending an extra $35, I highly recommend the Nickel Finish upgrade on it. Personally, I love it to death and opt for that finish on every UltraSabers hilt I buy, when it's available. A couple of my UltraSabers hilts have the Emerald Driver, and it truly is the Rolls Royce of lightsaber goodness. The color range is phenomenal.  Hope you'll share a review video and/or pictures when you get it, and especially hope you feel welcome here. It's a great community here.

WOW!!! So glad to be a member of this forum.

Question guys - I've found a PHENOMINAL lightsaber stand, it's the stand to end all stands.  Totally Star Wars, through and through.  Problem is it's very expensive.  Worth it?  Yes, but the question is, I have to buy it before I even get to purchase my Guardian.  I'd show a pic or name it, but I feel that if I did that, somebody would snap it up before me.  What better to compliment your saber than the perfect stand?
