Title: Looking for recommendations for wife's saber
Post by: Wannabe_Jedi on March 21, 2016, 09:33:45 PM
So, my wife is wanting to make something akin to a nagamaki. She wants to use the dark Initiate LE v4 and we're thinking one vented couple and at least black finish yari extension. We'd appreciate any suggestions from you guys.

I'll follow this, I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my Apprentice V4.

Looks like we had the right idea, came across this thread all of a sudden: http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=29719.0;topicseen

Must've been the will of the Force.

I use one yari extension with my Initiate V4 and get that kind of weapon, it's excellent to wield!  Another nice option, which wouldn't require the extension and may be a little slimmer, is the Dark Arbiter.  Excellent saber.

Not the OP, but thank you all the same Master Nero! I've a grab bag Apprentice I'm willing myself to like (wavering between adding a yari extension or buying another and making a staff), but my saber of choice is a Dark Arbiter, glad to read it's a good one for sparring.

I think she'll end up needing two, if not three yari. My wife is about 6'1" and looking for the emitter to be around chest or shoulder height

Do you mean with the tip to the ground?  I'm 6'2", so it's a fairly close comparison.  What size blade would she prefer?  With a full size 36" blade, and one extension, you're talking about a weapon that's roughly 5 feet long.

That's closer to a naginata than a nagimaki.  Traditionally, the length of a nagimaki handle is the same length as the blade.  The Yari extensions are 15", vented couplers are ~1.75", and the Initiate v4 is ~9.875".  So you're looking at ~26.635".  With a 32" blade, you'd have about 30" of usable blade (as about 2" goes into the emitter).  Short of a custom blade length, that's probably as close as you're going to get to that.

If she wants the emitter at shoulder height, then I'm going to guesstimate that at about 60" (5').  So, 3 Yari (45") + 3 couplers (5.25") + Initate v4 (9.875") = 60.125", or just about what she wants.

Yeah, she's kind of flip flopping on the naganata and the nagamaki. I think we're going to go with a 24" blade.
