Title: Fenrir
Post by: svander on February 04, 2016, 08:43:07 AM
This saber begins its life as a standard issue manticore with emerald driver, obsidian V4, recharge port, silver covertech wheel and white AV switch.

I wanted to try a different blade plug so I did this:

I also replaced the standard covertech wheel for one from the competition. Let me say this: while I dig the design of the competition's covertech wheel, it's extremely unfinished, full of sharp edges. Very uncomfortable.

Something else was amiss. The manticore emitter is beautiful but it's a bit ornately. Reminds me of an old republic saber with all the intricate detail, the roundness of the emitter end and the way the Windows angle outward. I wanted to try and put something together a bit sleeker.

I went into the ultra sabers lose parts page and picked out a shock pommel and an overlord emitter.

Still in its infancy. I have some plans for this saber which include Norse themed custom laser etching and medium wear, like a well used tool. I'll use this thread to update the progress.

Hi.  I like the MHS swap outs that you have done with your Manticore.  It does look very sleek.  Just one correction. The pommel is not a Shock but is the silver Catalyst.   You will enjoying using the Manti emitter and pommel on other sabers.   :)

You're right. I think my confusion stems from the fact that the shock pommel was my first choice but then I changed my mind for this cleaner piece.

Very nice! Your choice of emitter and pommel seem to blend into the hilt design of the Manticore so nicely. Windowed emitters are my favorite and I like how you preserved that aspect of the Manticore by using the Overlord emitter. +1 to you!

Is that a different blade plug in the Overlord emitter?

Thanks guys.

I must say I was very pleasantly surprised as to how well these pieces blended together. No gaps or edges. The end result is super smooth.

The blade plug in the overlord emitter is just the spare covertech wheel pushed down the other end of the stock blade plug. It looked great as a blade plug like that so I left it. It was just the right diameter to sit tightly in there.

I ended up installing the US covertech wheel back because the finish is so much nicer and put the other guys' piece in the plug instead.

Meant to award you a point so here it is.  I may be borrowing your design for a future swap out.  Presently have neither the pommel or emitter in my arsenal.  Again nice design.  8)   Would you please do a length measurement.  Thanks.

That's an impressive set-up.  The Overlord emitter and Catalyst pommel go well on the Manticore body

*Thinking furiously*

I have a Catalyst and a Manticore...

I'm definitely trying this. I had no idea those pieces would work so well together. Fantastic look!

Thanks a lot.  A decent length but not too long.   :)

The Overlord emitter looks so good on there. Glad it's the next saber I'm hoping to get. Definitely going to try that swap when I do.

The only thing that is bothering me is that the pieces have slightly different finish. They're smoother than the body. I'm going to have to give all the exposed aluminum some wear to even out the texture.

Way cool. I need to make my own personal saber :P

I took some time to take it apart, masked the anodized center of the hilt and gave it a good spun with various grits of abrasive pads in downgrading coarseness until I achieved an nice even spun finish all around the exposed alloy. My arms are sore as hell but I think the results are worth it albeit subtle.

Haha "Moneyshot" is the perfect description. It looks gorgeous. How long do you think it will be before you'll be able to get the etching/engraving done?

May be a bit because I'm still in the design phase. I don't want to screw that up being it's permanent.

cool! I have done something very similar with my manticore as well...I adored that emitter, but started playing around with other bits.
