Title: I really need to find myself an anvil.
Post by: JediShadow on February 04, 2014, 08:51:52 PM
I'm just getting into the world of metal working. I built a small charcoal/coal burning foundry for melting aluminum. I'm wanting to get into forging as well. I have a lot of scrap and pieces parts and will be making a forge here when the weather gives up being so freaking cold. My great uncles have been farmers all their lives. They have lots of hammers and tongs and miscellaneous tools but what we can't seem to track down is an anvil.

They are still looking for me but I figure I'd check on here. Anyone do any forging? If so where might be good places to find an anvil? I'll buy a new one if need be. Just figure I'd check into used ones since I'm just testing the waters here. Also if you don't have an actual anvil what do you use instead? I'm open to other options!

I just checked out Harbor Freight and they have two, a 55 pound and a 15 pound one. The reviews were kind of mixed because it dented fairly easy. They fixed that by welding a piece of thick steel on top of it. The 55 lb one was around $50 but I have no idea what the shipping would be.

I looked at those, too. Price is awesome but being cast iron the durability is lacking. Thanks for reminding me of them.

Do you happen to have a scrap yard near you? They may have one lying around or possibly a piece of i beam. Also check out Northern Tool, they have a 100 lb one for $400.

That's actually a great idea! I quick google shows a couple of places in the central ohio area. Thanks again Silver!

I've seen sections of old railroad ties used as effective anvils as well.
I'm not sure where you'd acquire one but it's there for consideration.
Also check any antique shops in your area. A friend of mine once found a very nice 20lb
anvil in the corner of such a store for less than $20.

Any new anvil that is "reasonable" will most likely be cast iron, and these tend to chip and shatter..."you'll shoot your eye out!"

A piece of I-beammakes for a very decent starter anvil.

I would start here...

Thank you both. Those are excellent suggestions! Now that it's mentioned there may be some I-beam out in the barn!
