Title: A few questions from a noob.
Post by: ThatOneGuy101 on April 24, 2013, 03:50:59 AM
I have a few questions.

1) Could anyone explain to me what an AV Switch is and how it's different/better than a regular switch?
2) If I buy an UltraSaber with a 36" blade, can I get US to trim it down to 34" ?

I don't know about the AV Switch thing, but from what I've read elsewhere the actual blade will be a bit shorter because it has to fit into the saber and be held in place inside the hilt. So it will take off a bit of the overall length, someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm only going off reviews I've seen, haven't got my own saber yet.

An AV switch sits a lot more flush with the body, so it can feel a lot more comfortable to hold.
Also, you need to depress the switch about 5mm (need confirmation) so you can't accidentally knock it when spinning.

However, you can only get the AV switch on hilts with sound. (unless the hilt comes with one, see Malice and Graflex)

a standard switch has a 'guard' around it about 1 cm in diameter that can get in the way depending on the hilt.

I personally prefer AV's to standard switches

The AVs are more flush with the hilt and are momentary (standard guarded switches are latching).

Yes.

I hope I can get US to trim a 36" down 2 inches, because I am thinking about getting a Phantasm Initiate V3 and I know that the blade goes 2 inches into the hilt, which would make the blade 34" but I would like it to be trimmed down 2 inches so that the blade can be 32" from hilt to tip. Also, I'm getting the colors in Blazing Red, so which blade type should I get in order to get the best look and brightness of the blade, UltraEdge or Mid-Grade?

I can tell ya that I'm glad I got the 32" blades on my staff. I'm 6', but there were times I was hitting the ground with the tip of the blades. As for the question on the blade, I'd say Mid-Grade, but it's really personal preference. Some like the UE with red. I'm not a fan personally.

i would agree with JP47 on the blade type - i think the red looks a little pinkish on the ultraedge - the regular midgrade will give you a really crisp blood red.

Okay, Mid-Grade it is! About how durable is the midgrade? Oh and I'm still curious, could I get UltraSabers to trim a 36" blade to a 34"?

Mid-Grade is very durable. I've been beating my blades around with friends for the past few months and we've had no problems at all except for the occasional blade tip popping out, but that's an easy fix with gorilla glue

My midgrades have stood up to full-speed dueling without a problem for over a year. They're pretty durable.

Like I said before - they'll cut it down for you.

Sorry Luna, didn't see that before haha. Does anyone know where the best place is to put a Covertec wheel on an Initiate V3?

Guys, I have a question. If I get a Dark Prophecy V3, would it be a good idea to get a blade plug for it? If so, can I get a black blade plug to match the rest of the hilt, or is it still going to be silver?

i think they are all silver, but you could always spray paint it.
